License Plates
Lost or Stolen License Plates
I lost my license plates. So, this is the procedure to get replacement license plates.
First, go and file a report at the local police station. It takes about 10 minutes if you can speak Thai. If you can’t speak Thai take photos. 20 baht.
Motorbike license plates – Cars below
Take that report to the Dept of Land Transportation in Nong Hoi. Near the Holiday Inn at the T intersection.
Take your Passport and/or Thai Driving License or both – plus copies of both.
Green Book (Vehicle registration book)
Submit to the counter and they will process. It cost 125 baht for the motorbike.
You can pickup your new license plate one month from the application date at Dept of Land transportation at Nong Hoi.
Take your license plate to your local mechanic and attach it securely to your motorbike.
Chiang Mai Motorbike License Plates – One Day Processing – Pickup in 3 weeks
The main Department of Land and Transport centre for everything motorbike registration and transfer related activities is at the lights at the Holiday Inn in Nong Hoi, but it’s at least 30 minutes from Nimman area. They do everything on the spot.
Motor vehicles license plates – Cars and bigger
Take that report to the Dept of Land Transportation in Hangdong. It’s located at the bottom end of the Airport runway on Hangdong Road.
Take your Passport and/or Thai Driving License or both – plus copies of both.
Blue Book (Vehicle registration book)
Submit to the counter and they will process. It cost maybe 250 baht for cars (I only have motorbikes).
They will advise a date that you can pick up your new license plate.
They may or may not keep the Blue Book for 2 days. If they do, return in 2 days to pick up the Blue Book. They will give you a receipt and a Card. Keep the receipt and card in your car.
If you get stopped by the Police – show them the Card and there will be no fine.
NOTE: If you get stopped by the Police for no License Plate, the fine is up to 1000 baht each time.
